The landing light lamp and ballast have a symbiotic relationship. Neither one has all of the electronics needed to operate the lamp. The electronics in the lamp base is essential to proper operation. If the capacitance of the two parts doesn't match, the light will flicker on startup, then fail. Try again in 15 minutes and you'll get the same result.
Often what it perceived as a bad ballast is actually a bad lamp. Installing a new ballast with a bad bulb will only result in another bad ballast. Using hardware store or auto lamps will similarly destroy an otherwise good ballast.
To prevent further unnecessary ballast failures, ballasts and lamps must be replaced as a set. The combined cost of a RAS ballast and lamp is less than the cost of an OEM ballast alone. The installation of an RAS ballast without a new lamp voids all warranties.
